Chapter 7

I finally got to sit down on the subway. Her name is Shemp. She’s like me. She does what I do, I thought. I never met another guardian before, though I sometimes wondered if they existed. New York City was a hotspot for travelers, but there must be others.

I got off at the stop closest to Ma’s house. It was twilight now, and the streetlights flickered and hummed above my head. I walked on the darker side of the street. If Leslie Leslie was right, Shemp would appear at any moment.

I peeked through the window in my grandparents’ kitchen. Ma and Pops sat at the table; Pops held his arm around Ma. They were crying quietly, whispering to each other between sniffles. Someone would be driving younger me over to their house soon so I could hear the news from them.

I waited on the curb under a broken streetlamp. Our neighborhood was quieter than Manhattan, though you could still always here people talking loudly, driving around, or watching TV. A constant murmur of noise that let you know you weren’t alone out here.

A car came down the street. I saw my neighbor at the wheel – Mrs. Perkins. I could only just make out someone small sitting in the backseat.

Two things happened at the same time.

First, there was a small flicker in the air as Jasper and two other men appeared out of nowhere. They sprinted for the car.

Second, a middle-aged woman with an eye patch appeared from the bushes across the street and streaked towards Jasper like a bullet.

The woman pulled a round, metallic gun from her pocket and aimed it at one of Jasper’s allies. The man flew backwards and hit the ground. Strings of energy held him to the ground like a fishing net. Jasper yelled something, and the other man ran towards the woman. She was looking the wrong way and was about to get hit.

I didn’t think. I sprinted towards the second man and leapt on top of him. He waved his arms in the air, trying to swat me away.

“Get out of here!” the woman screamed at me. She still held the gun and pointed it at the man I was grappling.

“No! You have to go after-“

I turned back towards the car with mini June. Jasper was already there. He pulled open the car door and shot something at Mrs. Perkins. Mrs. Perkins slumped over the driving wheel. Her eyes were still open, but there was no life in them.

My breath caught in my throat. Luckily my hands knew to hold on tight to the man I was fighting.

Then, Jasper pulled me – little June – out of the backseat with one arm around her neck. His mouth contorted into an evil sneer as he held her up and waved her around.

The other man threw me off him, and I rolled on the street towards the gutter. I watched Jasper as he yelled something to the other man. The other man turned and pointed something at the one-eyed woman.
